SUMMARY:Programs for New Americans
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, 4.5 million\, or almost a quarter of New York residents\, were designated “immigrants” by the US Citizenship and Immigration Service. New York is a state undergoing tremendous demographic changes and New York’s museums are responding by providing support and resources to New Americans as they settle into their new communities. These programs can cover a wide range of areas including language acquisition\, job placement\, legal assistance\, and offering life skills through the arts. In partnership with the Queens Library\, the Queens Museum’s New New Yorkers program led by Guido Garaycochea offers free multilingual classes to support the needs of adult immigrant communities in Queens. At the Whitney Museum of American Art\, Dyeemah Simmons is focused on collaborating with artists to develop spaces for marginalized communities to create\, commune\, and gain access to critical resources. Margarita Espada is the Founder and Executive Director of Teatro Yerbabruja\, an art organization with the mission to use the arts as a tool for social change. Teatro Yerbabruja’s programs are anchored in the values of racial justice that honor the contributions of People of Color\, and that are truly diverse\, equitable\, and inclusive. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Climate Change Facilities and Programming
DESCRIPTION:Building in anticipation of climate change involves designing and constructing museums with the future impacts of climate change in mind. This proactive approach aims to enhance resilience reduce vulnerability\, and mitigate the potential negative effects of changing climatic conditions. \nDesigned by Caples Jefferson Architects and completed in 2014\, Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn was designed to be a balance between the existing\, 19th-century houses of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America and to create a new 23\,000 sq ft complex that would include a museum and state of the art exhibition\, performance\, and education facilities. The buildings gravitate around the central landscaped area where past and present face each other and are bound together by the ever-changing farmland vegetation that evokes the agricultural heritage of the community. \nThe Climate Museum is the first museum in the United States dedicated to the climate crisis. Over the last five years\, the Museum has presented eight exhibitions and more than 300 events; engaged 350+ high school students in leadership\, advocacy\, and arts programs; and welcomed more than a hundred thousand visitors in-person and many more online. As the climate crisis intensifies\, so does the need for communal spaces where we can all gain understanding and resolve. The Climate Museum makes inclusive dialogue and immersive cultural programming on climate accessible to a broad public. \nThe Wild Center’s Youth Climate Program (YCP) is a global initiative that works to convene\, inspire\, and network young people through youth climate summits\, empowering them to lead and act on climate change solutions in their schools and communities. At the center of the program is a two-day retreat\, the annual Adirondack Youth Climate Summit that brings together over 200 high school and college students to learn about climate change. As a science-based organization\, The Wild Center is deeply concerned about how changes in one of the major pillars that support the natural world will impact life on Earth. From Youth Climate Summits to creating solutions to environmental issues through our Building a Greener Adirondacks initiative\, The Wild Center is making strides toward a sustainable future. \nRegister Here
